Title

Systematics and paleoecology of small benthic foraminifera of Tirgan Formation in Bajgiran and Bazangan sheets in Kopeh-Dagh sedimentary basin, northeast of Iran

Pages

  19-38

Abstract

The sedimentary basin of Kopeh- Dagh is located in the northeast of Iran. The study of 80 microscopic thin sections from Bajgiran and Bazangan sheet with (1:100000) scale which belonging to the Tirgan Formation in the center and east of the Kopeh-Dagh sedimentary basin, led to identified of 15 species belonging to 11 genera of small benthic foraminifera. The identified foraminifera from the point of view of paleoecology were investigated. The Tirgan Formation in Bajgiran and Bazagan sheet consists of oolitic limestones, marly limestones, oolitic limestones with Orbitolina and biosparite limestones. The identified genera and species of foraminifera in Tirgan Formation suggest Barremian-Aptian age, and for determining accurate age additional studies are required. The sediments of this formation were deposited in the middle and outer part of the continental shelf under aerobic to semi-aerobic conditions. The association of benthic foraminifera and the absence of plankton foraminifera in the Tirgan Formation indicate this formation was deposited under shallow water conditions during the Barremian-Aptian age. Petrographic studies have also confirmed the formation deposited from the shallow lagoonal environment to the shallow open marine, which is consistent and similar to the studied foraminiferal assemblage.
