Title

THE FUNCTIONS AND TYPES OF MOTIF IN SADEGH HEDAYAT S STORIES

Pages

  91-116

Abstract

The study of MOTIF in fiction and the analysis of the relationship between MOTIF and other fictional elements contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of stories and their implied meanings. Sadegh Hedayat is among the authors who, either intentionally or unintentionally, make enormous use of MOTIFs in their fictional works. "Music", "painting", "darkness", "coldness", and "shadow" are some of the recurrent elements and anti-Arabism, the power of fate, determinism, and isolation are some of the recurrent themes in his stories. These elements and concepts recur in Hedayat's stories significantly, and they represent the artistic intention of the author and his intellectual as well as emotional concerns. Conceptual MOTIFs reveal Hedayat's world view and his view of life and human beings, as well as his personality features and concerns. This paper studies the dominant MOTIFs in Hedayat's stories and shows that all types of MOTIFs which recur in each STORY have fundamental functions in his fictional works and they contribute to the coherence and integrity of the plot, characterization, and setting of the stories.
