Title

A LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW IN ''THE FIRST DAY IN TOMB" BY SADEGH CHOUBAK (SIMPSON'S MODEL, 1993)

Abstract

The present paper aims at a linguistic analysis of Chubak's narrative fiction ' The First Day in the Tomb". Simpson (1993) proposes a linguistic framework for the analysis of the POINT OF VIEW of different NARRATORs of a story. Using this framework, this analysis shows that the NARRATOR of the story is in a Third- Person Reflector who narrates the thoughts, feelings, desires and ideas of the main character. Moreover, to express the states, manners, feelings and ideas of the main character, the story has used Free Indirect Discourse. On the basis of the second axis of Simpson's typology, this fiction is mostly in a positive MODALITY which here means that the NARRATOR appears to be certain and confident of the reality of death. Various linguistic modal operators have been used to represent such a positive MODALITY, including those words carrying MODALITY, verba sentiendi, like evaluative adverbs and adjectives, and generalizing and opinion-expressive sentences, verbs reporting a character's thoughts, perceptions and reactions. The dominant thought reflected in the language of this narrative fiction is the confidence in the truth of death, extinction, suffering life and death, regret at losing life, hope of forgiveness and fear of requital. However in some cases, negative MODALITY is used to express the character's doubt and ambiguity of the hereafter and to express the NARRATOR's un/certainty of the feelings attributed to other characters.
