Title

ART; A LOOK AT THE BEING OF THE OBJECT A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SHKLOVSKY’S AND THE EARLY WITTGENSTEIN'S VIEWS ON ART

Pages

  79-90

Abstract

The early Wittgenstein believes that the work of ART is an object which is seen sub specie aeternitatis. Thus, it is not seen in the way ordinary things are seen or perceived. In a somewhat similar vein, Victor Shklovsky, the contemporary literary critic and thinker, regarded ART as a way of defamiliarizing the objects and making the familiar unfamiliar. I argue that there is a noticeable similarity and relation between these two aesthetic viewpoints. Both Wittgenstein and Shklovsky considered ART as an opportunity for the audience to experience another type of perception and observation: perceiving objects in themselves and out of their usual CONTEXT. ART separates the object from its ordinary CONTEXT and makes it appear to the subject in a different way and under another perceptual mode. As Shklovsky asserts, the task of ART is to try to free the object from “the automatism of perception” since when the objects are perceived in the usual way, one can use Shklovsky's own words and say that they are actually “reckoned as nothing.” In The this paper, I try to show that the earlier attitude of Wittgenstein toward AESTHETICS and the work of ART is in harmony with the formalistic approach of Shklovsky.
