Abstract

It has been some time since the direct representation of the message in advertisement industry has been replaced by an implicit visual message. The different connotations of the advertising object expose the interlocutor to the different levels of the SYSTEM OF VISUAL SIGNs, and, hence, create a closer contact between the interlocutor and the message. This article studies the functions of the METAPHORs at the different levels of the SYSTEM OF VISUAL SIGNs in the posters of Ashura as an advertising media. In this research, we are facing three principal issues: (1) identification of the levels of the SYSTEM OF VISUAL SIGNs that are linked to ASHURA POSTERS; (2) the implications of the analysis of the different levels of the SYSTEM OF VISUAL SIGNs in designing the posters of Ashura; and, finally, (3) how the visual and verbal elements, as well as their interactions, can manifest themselves METAPHORically in the posters. We have concluded that METAPHOR displays itself in any of the three levels of the SYSTEM OF VISUAL SIGN.The different dispositions of the elements in each of these levels reveal different aspects of the METAPHOR and pave the way for a variety of interpretations of the posters.
