Abstract

This article tries to present a critique of NATIONAL SECURITY defined as a nationalist perception of security. It could be subsumed under a general critique of the ideology of NATIONALISM. The author claims that the theory and the history of nation-state have created their own supposition of security and thereby have undermined the ancient and authentic content of security replacing it with a not only incorrect but also destructive perception of security. The main question posed by this article is that whether security can be "national"? In other words, is NATIONAL SECURITY theory or the perception of security in the framework of nation-state relation useful? The answer or the hypothesis of this article is opposed to the idea of nationality (nationalism). Therefore, an extended theory of NATIONAL SECURITY is contradictory. Security, as we shall see later, is the product of the free spontaneous, and unconscious action of individuals in their inter-ethnic and collective relations, but "nationality" or NATIONALISM is an ideology containing not only a conscious distinction, but also a will for superiority followed by the idea of aggression. Therefore, a modern or national perception of security is meaningless because of its intrinsic contradiction with practically destructive consequences. In the rest of the article, the post and the current developments of Iranian foreign policy is studied on the basis of this hypothesis.
