Title

THE WORD OF GOD: FROM THE LOGOS TO THE WORD OF SELF

Pages

  99-138

Abstract

The Word of God, on the one hand, relates to the discussion of the nature of the revelation and the way God speaks to man and on the other hand, to the relation of God with the creatures and their creation. Historically, the first emphasis on this concept occurred as “logos” or “word” in Greece and in the thought of Heraclitus, which seems, due to the ambiguity that existed in his mind, he used it as the rational principle governing the universe, or perhaps "God". After him, also Plato, with no particular emphasis, used the words as God's wisdom. Stoics with more emphasis on the concept of the LOGOS, and probably following Heraclitus considered it as the principle of all wisdom, God's wisdom, and identical with God. This concept influenced the conservative Platonists and more over the Alexandrian Jewish Philon in early Christian years (BC), so that it played a central role in his thought as the intermediaries between God and the world, the God’s superior power, and the manifestation of the absolute existence. The impact of Philon School with the influence of stoic thoughts can be seen in some early Christians, in the Fourth Gospel, and in the Polos’ letters. Here Christ is the LOGOS or THE WORD OF GOD through him all things were created. Finally, after aureus disputes, his uncreatablity and eternity became the general Christian belief. Later, the debate about creatable or uncreatable word or LOGOS with the existing background in the ISLAMic thought probably caused the discussion about THE WORD OF GOD or the Qur'an being accidental or old, and leading to various perspectives, among which the views of Mu'tazilah, Ash’arites and particularly Ibn Callub can be mentioned.
