Abstract

Khalil Matran is of the contemporary Arabic poets whose romantic murmurings in literature have been heard for the first time. Love which is one of the most important themes in Romanticism, is the foundation of his poetry and comprises a vast part of hisDiwan (book of poetry). Of the characteristics of love theme in Matran's poetry are the development toward this key element and its stance in Romantic poetry. He has dealt the matter from different angles and levels. The poet's look, in the first stage is mixed with the child's innocence and righteousness, later in the early youth it changes to physical and instinctive love and the poet's experiences connects with the poetic emotions and encounters with the transformation of physical love to alibi love together with profound intrinsic sorrow but at the same time sweet and satisfying feelings to the lover. Consequently it reaches the contemporary stance of love in the ideal and spiritual stage till the assertion of annihilation and unification with the beloved. In this paper, we' ve tried to survey the development of Matran's lyric poetry. Our aim is to justify the theory that love in Matran's poetry is of higher rank than is expressed in researches and one can consider it as idealistic and spiritual ones with the claim of unity between the lover and the beloved.
