Abstract

 Detection of LAND COVER changes plays a major role in environmental planning regarding the sustainable development purposes. Analyzing multi-temporal satellite imagery is now commonly regarded as an efficient method for extraction of these changes. In this way, post classification comparison is known as a popular and well-established method. However, tills technique has not an adequate precision in the presence of MIXED PIXELs due to using hard classifiers in its structure. So, a remarkable uncertainty exists in the resultant change matrix. In tills paper, different methods of CHANGE DETECTION are categorized. Then, a CHANGE DETECTION method is proposed based on the fractional maps produced through SOFT CLASSIFICATION process of satellite imagery. Tills novel approach provides the possibility of producing the change matrix with sub-pixel accuracy. Implementing tills method on the multi-temporal images of the study area, the results are compared with those obtained from the traditional post classification comparison method. As a key result of the research, it is demonstrated that the post classification comparison leads to an underestimate of the change area with respect to the proposed method (in average 9.2 percent). Likewise, difference between the results of two methods is so obvious for inhomogeneous LAND COVERs. Overlay, the proposed method is produced the change matrix more accurate than traditional ones and could be utilized in environmental planning and management.
