Abstract

The Political and economic influence of Islamic Republic of IRAN and EUropean Union could provide a fertile ground for developing a deeper cooperation between the two sides in the world and local exchanges؛ But the two sides not only have failed to establish a trusting relation during these three decades, but also this relation has been subject to ups and downs which ultimately culminated in a cold relation. The purpose of the present study is examining the role of identity constructs affecting relations between IRAN and EUropean Union focusing on the social and identity constructs as important factors in the convergence of relation between the two sides. The assumption is that relations between the Islamic Republic and the EUropean Union after the Islamic Revolution has been influenced by the constructs of identity, culture, values, norms and inter-subjective concepts. These constructs have led to a different outlook toward global issues and a pessimistic view toward the two sides leading to their divergence, because of the fact that IRANian values and norms derive from Islamic-revolutionary identity, which have been formed after the Islamic Revolution and, on the other hand, EUropean Union has its roots in EUropean Identity, western liberalist values and secularism.
