Abstract

The establishment of the Kurdistan newspaper as the first written publication marked the beginning of a conceptual shift in the context of modern Kurdish history, laying the foundation for the formation of concepts such as Historical Awareness, critical thought, and a new approach to historiography. Historical topics were the main subject of the newspaper's politics, presenting new interpretations of the Kurdish past, existence, and identity. The historical thought of this newspaper, on the one hand, signified a departure from traditional, mythological, and oral narratives, while on the other hand, it challenged the Ottoman historiographical discourse, which ignored cultural and national differences and was based on Pan-Islamism and the Ottoman Ummah. In this regard, a new system of Kurdish historical memory emerged amidst these discursive conflicts between the Kurds and the "Other, " and the ways of narrating and representing the past took on a new form. This study addresses how the conditions and factors that led to the emergence of this new historiography came about and what its functions and characteristics are. The findings of the study indicate that, in addition to laying the groundwork for a documented and coherent historiography, the fundamental mission of the newspaper's historical approach was to shift the fragmented image of the past toward a shared collective memory. Furthermore, the overall process of recalling and reflecting on the past, which symbolizes a new beginning and the reproduction of history, has served to strengthen and maintain the continuity of Kurdish historical identity.
