Title

EFFECTS OF WATER NITRATE CONCENTRATIONS ON GROWTH RATE AND HINDRANCE IN PSEUDO ANEMONE FISH (AMPHIPRION OCELLARIS)

Pages

  13-20

Abstract

The effect of different concentrations of NITRATE ions on the growth rate of pseudo anemone fish larvae (Amphiprion ocellaris) was evaluated. The purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate concentration of NITRATE ions of water in production of fish larvae (by decreasing time and expenses in the ornamental fish culture and by obtaining more information for better management of preservation and exploitation of these fish stocks in natural habitat). In this survey, 150 pseudo CLOWN FISH larvae (with average weight of 1.4 g and length of 2 mm) were maintained for 3 months in 15 tanks (25-liter each) with different concentrations of NITRATE ions (5, 10, 20, 40, 80 mg/l) and total length and weight changes were evaluated weekly. In this study, water salinity was 20 g/l, temperature 25oC, pH 8.4 and 14 hours of light during the day were considered. To prepare different concentrations of NITRATE ions, sodium NITRATE was dissolved in the water. Larvae were fed by de-capsulated cyst of artemia and 10 percent of water of water of tanks was changed daily. The results showed that the growth rate of fish (total length and weight) was in opposite to NITRATE concentrations that the growth rate of larvae was negatively correlated with increasing concentration of NITRATE in the water. The growth of larvae in NITRATE concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/l was good daily (400% and 300%), but the growth of larvae at concentrations of 20, 40 mg/l had a significant decrease (200%, 100% and 0% respectively). After 28 days all larval fishes died in the NITRATE concentration of 80 mg/l.
