Abstract

Objectives: This study was carried out to determine MENTAL HEALTH of the university STUDENTS in ISLAMIC AZAD UNIVERSITY, ABADAN branch who were admitted in the academic year 2006-2007.Method: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, 554 STUDENTS (366 femal, 188 male) were randomly selected and evaluated on the basis of the General Health Questionnair-28 (GHQ-28). The reliability of the Questionnaire was computed, and the validity was also determined in a separate study including 80 STUDENTS. Data was analyzed using T-test, ANOVA, and Scheffe test.Results: The study showed that 55.5% of females, and 34.4% of males, and overall 47.7% of all of the subjects had probably MENTAL HEALTH problems. The results also indicated a significant difference in MENTAL HEALTH status between men and women, single and married, interested and uninterested in their fields of study, and different age groups.However, it was found that there was no significant difference between indigenous and non-indigenous STUDENTS. Also, the data yielded appropriate validity and reliability for GHQ-28.Conclusion: The high MENTAL HEALTH problems in the young population of university STUDENTS are very important because of their future role in the society. Therefore, we need to come up with plans in order to improve student’s MENTAL HEALTH status.
