Title

The Dialectic of Universality and Cultural Relativism in Sustainable Development Goals

Pages

  141-176

Abstract

Sustainable development is a concept that is constantly evolving and developing. Although the term sustainable development has different meanings and definitions, the dominant axis of these definitions is gathered and accepted in "the commitment to meet the current and future needs of the people, along with the recognition of the limited ecological capacity of the earth". In this article, we have categorized the seventeen goals of sustainable development into three super goals of basic human rights, basic environment and basic structure, and we have examined the super goal of basic human rights in the light of two approaches of relativism and universalism. The human rights super goal of the Foundation is a set of goals of the 2030 agenda that are explicitly or implicitly related to the issue of human rights. Most of the goals listed in this agenda refer to the important issue of human rights. This article, with the aim of helping to make decisions and implement the goals of sustainable development in Iran as best as possible, seeks the question that "has the 2030 agenda paid attention to relativism in the implementation of the super goal of human rights?". This article, using the descriptive-analytical method and based on official and valid national and international library and electronic documents in the period of 2015 until now, comes to the conclusion that the relativistic approach, in different parts of the agenda, even in the challenging issue of human rights and the super goal Basic human rights have also been taken into consideration and governments can follow and implement the goals set with a relativistic approach based on their national conditions and status. This approach can have a great impact on the performance of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the appropriate implementation of these goals.
