EFFECTS OF DROUGHT STRESS ON GRAIN YIELD AND SOME MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF DURUM WHEAT LINES

Abstract

 To evaluate GRAIN YIELD and physiological traits of 12 DURUM WHEAT LINES under water deficit at anthesis stage, an experiment was conducted at the Islamic Azad University, Tabriz branch, during in 2008. This study was carried out in a split plot experiment based on randomized complete block design with four replications.Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences among lines studied. DROUGHT STRESS reduced yield, spike number per plant and harvest index. In spite of a general reduction in yield, we found some cultivars, such as Yazligh and D\86-20 to produce relatively high yields under DROUGHT STRESS. Using correlation analysis for all traits under both stress and non stress conditions, we conclude that length of peduncle, due to its supplying dry matter is useful in plant drought torelarnce. We used several selection indices, to evaluate drought tolerance of lines in this study. It was found that indices like STI, GMP, MP were appropriate to measure drought tolerance of DURUM WHEAT LINES. Because there are the higher correlations between indices and GRAIN YIELD under both DROUGHT STRESS and non stress conditions, we obtained Yazlig and D\86-20 to be the tolerant lines.
