Abstract

The relation between historical situations, texts, and readers is complicated by the various reasons. This complexity prevents one to read and understand the texts with ease. One of the affecting factors in this complexity is the problem of discourse changes in historical process. This paper, by analyzing the narratives of SHEIKH MOHAMMAD KHIABANI's uprising, is about to study the effect of discourse change in case of two dominate discourses: national CONSTITUTIONalist discourse (Azarbayjan-based, Iran-based, uprising-based), and national ancient oriented discourse (Iran-based). The method of research in this paper is critical analysis of narrative and discourse. The result shows that DISCOURSE TURN does not allow the events to be understood as they are happened, and causes various diverse conflicting readings of the event. In these narratives Khiabani's uprising has been read into a wide range: from freedom seeking and democratic to identity seeking and separatist, from patriotism to dependency on foreign agents aiming the decomposition of the country. Also the characteristics and motivations of Khiabani and his followers given in the narratives are variable in terms of selfishness, authoritarian, humanitarian, Anti-oppression and Anti-colonialism.
