EFFECT OF PARENTING STYLES ON NATIONAL AND SOCIAL IDENTITY OF STUDENTS (CASE OF STUDY: FEMALE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN TEHRAN)

Abstract

 Studies indicate that one important factor shaping identity is the parenting style. This research was of survey type. The population included all high school students in Tehran from whom 382 students were selected by Kokran’s model. To collect data, PARENTING STYLES, national and SOCIAL IDENTITY questionnaires were used validity of which were verified by experts of the field. Their reliability was calculated as 0.70. The data were analyzed using multi-variate regression. The results indicated that PARENTING STYLES (control and affection) had low significant effect on NATIONAL IDENTITY. Parenting style of control (t=3.42, B=0.034) and parental style of affection (t=4.71, B=0.034) can predict %21 of the NATIONAL IDENTITY variance. The effect of parental styles on students’ SOCIAL IDENTITY was low but statistically significant. Parenting style of affection (B=0.10, t=4.84) can predict %22 of SOCIAL IDENTITY variance. At last, parenting style of control had no significant effect on students’ SOCIAL IDENTITY.
