Title

EFFICACY OF ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS ON RESISTANCE ENTEROCOCCAL BIOFILM STRAINS ISOLATED FROM URINARY CATHETERS

Pages

  23-32

Abstract

ENTEROCOCCI constitute a part of autochthonous bacteria of gastrointestinal flora. Bacterial attachment ability on various surfaces enables them to generate BIOFILMs on hospital equipment. These bacteria generate BIOFILMs on the surface of URINARY CATHETERs which remain in patient’s body in prolonged period. BIOFILM formation leads to chronic infections. The extensive antibiotic resistance renders the treatment of these patients with serious problems. In this study, isolated ENTEROCOCCI from hospitalized patient following the detection and the determination of antibiotic resistance are applied for BIOFILM model formation. BIOFILMs were formed on polystyrene microtitre plates. The rate of the effect of prevalent antimicrobial material on BIOFILM formation has been measured by microtitre plate’s method using ELISA reader. The studying of antibiotic resistance of ENTEROCOCCI strain was determined in maximal and minimum resistance cases respectively in relation to Tetracycline (93.7%), Ampicillin (21.8%) and high-level multidrug resistance was observed against Tetracycline group (78.1%). Among biocides were used in study, maximal performance for killing of BIOFILM cells was observed in benzalkonium chloride, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and povidone-iodine respectively Effects  of benzalkonium chloride  and chlorine on entroccocal BIOFILM indicated that in high concentrations the removal rate of BIOFILM also was increased and low concentration (250ppm) leads to almost 100% to the kill-off of the BIOFILM cells.
