Abstract

Security is one of the important social, psychological, and cultural components of each society, which is essential for the survival of any political and social system according to sociological and psychological studies. The Psychological and social security of the citizens is directly related to the phenomenon of security; hence, it brings up several issues regarding the creation of security or insecurity as a problem in the society. Part of the problem concerns the social group of WOMEN in the metropolitan cities of Iran, especially Mashhad. This research aims to explore the WOMEN’s Psychological and social feeling about the public security that exists at the urban level. The study is a cross- sectional survey of the WOMEN above 20 years old from the 12 regions of Mashhad during the year 2011. The sample size is 391based on Cochran formula and through the use of multi- stage cluster sampling method. The data collection instrument is an interview- questionnaire, whose reliability has been confirmed by using Chronbach Alpha. In this research the average of WOMEN’s feeling of security is about 2.27 based on Likert’s scale (5-item), which is lower than the average. According to the stepwise method of multi- Variate regression analysis , the factors affecting WOMEN’s SENSE OF SECURITY are the use of MASS MEDIA, attitude toward dress code, urban design and planning , and individuals’ self – concept. The results have shown that the variables of social support and economic security have an adverse relationship with the dependent variable. In fact, these factors have explained 55% of the variance of the dependent variable of the research.
