Title

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URBAN DEFENSELESS SPACES WITH SENSE OF SECURITY (CASE OF STUDY; TEHRAN CITIZENS)

Abstract

The relationship between urban space and the sense security of residents is considered as one of the important topics of urban sociology. These spaces can also make a significant impact on the psychological security of residents. This article aims to study the characteristics of urban space and its role in residents’ SENSE OF SECURITY by using different theoretical viewpoints in sociology, social psychology and urban design such as; Jane Jacobs's monitoring the street theory, Rapoport cultural differences theory, Newman defensible space approach, Wilson broken windows theory, Clarke situational crime prevention theory, Ray Jeffrey spatial layout, and Hillier's theory. The study was a survey research and a questionnaire was used to collect needed data. SENSE OF SECURITY had four components (financial, mental, physical and sexual security) and 28 items. The research tool had face validity and its reliability Cronbach's alpha was 0.89.400 residents of Tehran population were selected as research sample that comprised of five urban areas of North, South, East, West and center of Tehran city. The results showed that residents’ SENSE OF SECURITY in defensible spaces was more than that of residents in indefensible spaces. Regression analysis showed that independent variables like the lack of ongoing monitoring of URBAN SPACES with low population density, inappropriate ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN of urban space, and the presence of strangers could explain 79 percent of sense of insecurity.
