Abstract

In structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organizer of human philosophy and existence. The theory of binaries later finds way from linguistics into cultural studies and eventually becomes challenged in post-modernist era. The objective of this research is to analyze THE GULISTAN of SA’DI on the basis of this theory.BINARY OPPOSITIONS perform an aesthetic-philosophical function in Sa'di's works, and particularly THE GULISTAN. In other words, phonological, semantic, and syntactic STRUCTURE of his works and above all his general discourse all form a binary opposition. Studying some instances of BINARY OPPOSITIONS found in THE GULISTAN, the researcher explains the reasons for their employment and then moves to investigate the relation between discourse STRUCTURE, its motif, and eventually the true nature of life.
