Abstract

In the history of the Quranic readings, there are many debates about dividing and restricting them to seven readings by Abu Bakr Ahmad Ibn Musa Ibn al-Abbas Ibn Mujahid, known as “ Ibn Mujahid” . One of the main points of critics regarding this discussion is the principle of limitation and the prevention of dissemination and development of any other reading of the Quran, except for his own choices. Given the large number of positive and negative comments in this regard, it seems necessary to examine his performance historically as well as to study the history of such a limiting approach in different eras of Islamic history until 4th century AH. By doing so, a judgment can be made about this important historical event and the following question can be answered: whether restricting of the Quranic readings is a heredity made by him or not? This research uses a descriptive-analytical method regarding the historical data to review the history of such a limiting approach from the age of the Prophet until the 4th century AH. It is concluded that: The first founder of limiting approach for the Quranic readings was the Prophet himself and after him, this idea has been pursued in different centuries and finally, Ibn Mujahid formalized it in the 4th century AH. For this reason, such a limiting approach regarding Quranic readings cannot be considered as a heredity, and thus be rejected.
