Abstract

That a Muslim marries a non-Muslim has been referred to in different verses like 3 of Noor, 221 of Baqarah and 10 of Momtahinah. Again in 5 of Ma`idah, Muslims` marrying the people of the Book has been dealt with. Fariqain commentators have given four views under this verse; some have viewed the marriage not lawful absolutely, some absolutely lawful and some have taken a middle position. The third itself includes two groups. The paper has explained all views in detail and critically. In the end, the view of lawfulness of marrying with the people of the book has been preferred.
