Title

CORRELATION BETWEEN OIL SEEPS AND ASMARI OIL FROM THE MASJID-I-SULAIMAN (MIS) OILFIELD

Pages

  39-49

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the genetic relationship (oil to oil correlation) between Asmari oils and oil seeps samples in Masjid-i-Sulaiman (MIS) oilfield by Gas Chromatography and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Gas Chromatography analysis results reveal that the kerogen of samples were type II and II/III, indicating marine organic matter with a little terrestrial input. C32-hopane 22S/ (22S+22R) versus C29-Sterane 20S/ (20S+20R), C29-sterane 20S/ (S+R) versus C29-sterane abb/(abb+aaa), C29-sterane (bb/bb+aa) versus C29 S/(S+R) and C29 S/(S+R) versus Ts/(Ts+Tm) show that Asmari oil and oil seeps are situated in oil window. Different ratios of saturate biomarkers including C29/C27 (R) versus Pr/Ph varied proportions of C27, C28, C29 steranes, ratio of C22/C21 versus C24/C23 Tricyclic Terpanes, C26/C25 versus C31R/C30 Hopane and C27 (Dia/Dia +Reg) Diasterane versus Pr/(Pr+Ph) indicate that studied samples were generated from shaly SOURCE ROCK in an anoxic environment. Extended Tricyclic Ratio (ETR), C28/C29 sterane ratios, and Oleanane Index show that oil seeps and Asmari oil have similar source and are assigned to Upper Cretaceous. Thus, close similarities in terms of maturity, common progenitor SOURCE ROCK with distinct depositional environment, support establishing a positive correlation between oil seeps and Asmari oil from the MASJID-I-SULAIMAN OILFIELD.
