Title

GEOCHEMISTRY AND PETROGENESIS OF THE BASALTS OF ABARSEJ FORMATION (LATE ORDOVICIAN), EASTERN ALBORZ, NORTH OF SHAHROOD

Pages

  12-23

Abstract

Despite of scarcity of ORDOVICIAN rocks in Iran, there are considerable outcrops of them in north and southwest of SHAHROOD, which are called Abesto, ABARSEJ and Ghelli Formations. There are scattered outcrops of BASALTic rocks in ABARSEJ and Ghelli Formations that have not been studied previously. These BASALTs were produced by eruption of first magmas generated during the initiation of extension and rifting of Paleotethys in the Eastern Alborz. They have close similarities with Soltan Maydan BASALT with Silurian age and have outcropped as lava, dyke and sill in the late ORDOVICIAN sedimentary units. Based on geochemical studies, these BASALTic rocks have BASALT, trachybasalt, and BASALTic trachy-andesite composition with alkaline nature and intra-plate characteristics. Primitive mantle and chondrite-normalized diagrams of these rocks show high LREE/HREE ratio and LILE enrichments without any HFSE depletion. They also plot, in alkali BASALTs of intra-continental rift field in discrimination tectonic diagrams. Binary diagrams of incompatible element ratios (such as La/Yb versus Dy/Yb) show that the parental magma was generated from 14-16% partial melting of a garnet-peridotite mantle source in 100-110 km depths.
