Abstract

The Middle Ages owed to the free atmosphere of ancient Greek and the teachings of Christianity formed a unique combination of RELIGION and PHILOSOPHY. In this article we survey the reaction of PHILOSOPHY against the religious teachings and the respond of RELIGION to the PHILOSOPHY. The presence of a powerful RELIGION such as Christianity affected the public opinion and the religious beliefs of the people and altered their attitudes toward PHILOSOPHY and the PHILOSOPHY, in its own turn, by presenting its intellectual heritage to the RELIGION forced it to be adjustable. To what extant these two streams affected each other is what we try to deal with here, but it is obvious that RELIGION and PHILOSOPHY had a close contact even when they denied each other. Therefore we should say that, on the one hand, RELIGION exercised an influence on the PHILOSOPHY and restricted its territory and, on the other hand, PHILOSOPHY had an impact on the RELIGION especially in the fields of teachings and interpretations.
