Title

DEFENDING THE SOCIALLY EXTENDED NOTION OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE

Pages

  199-212

Abstract

Objectives: Alexander Bird has recently argued that social scientific knowledge is not reduced to individual scientific knowledge, nor supervenes on any mental state. Jenifer Lackey has raised two objections against Bird’s account of SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE. According to the first, Bird’s proposal contradicts with the conjunction of two accepted principles in epistemology named Knowledge/Action and Group/Member Action Principles. According to the second objection, Bird’s account does not accommodate defeating social scientific knowledge. The present article intends to answer Lackey’s objections.Method: Conceptual analysis together with respecting intuitions about scientific knowledge. Results: A principle replaced with the accepted principles will be introduced which respects the socially extended notion of scientific knowledge. I call it Group/Member Knowledge/Action Principle. Secondly, I will indicate that the SOCIALLY EXTENDED SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE, although rarely, is defeated. Conclusion: The author of the survey concludes Bird’s account of social scientific knowledge is consistent with the principles accepted in epistemology horizontal relationships.
