Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of using the INTERNET on the young users’ ethnic IDENTITY. From this perspective, in addition to the study’s review of the concept of the subject, an integrated approach on the basis of the Giddens’ structuraction theories is applied in order to explain the phenomenon. Information and data were collected according to the survey methods in research and techniques using questionnaire survey on 384 young users, selected by cluster sampling, aged between 18 to 28 in Tehran. On this account, Alpha Cronbach co efficiency was applied in order to calculate the validity indices within structural and face validity and include criteria validity of the research. Thus, the findings indicate that while the youth are likely to use the global culture, they show a great sense of commitment to the elements of their ethnic IDENTITY and culture, and using the INTERNET culminates in reinforcement of their ethnic IDENTITY; moreover, the results represent a significant correlation between the duration of INTERNET use and the ethnic IDENTITY, and using the INTERNET for specific objectives, including news, scientific and educational purposes, will furthermore results in strengthening of the ethnic IDENTITY.
