Abstract

SOLARIUM or tanning machines are available at gyms, beauty salons and.... Now, it is about 35 years since these devices have been introduced for tanning with ultraviolet radiation (UV). UV radiation having chemical reactions with skin, increases skin pigmentation and helps the formation of vitamin D and calcium absorption. Using SOLARIUM in Europe where they get less benefit from direct sunlight quickly spread. Besides the advantages, reports of increasing side effects of SOLARIUM use in countries like America, Australia, Sweden and Norway were published and mentioned as one of the effective factors in developing SKIN CANCER and opaque on eye lenses. Therefore, these countries established regulations on the production and use of these devices. In Iran, SOLARIUM came to the market about 10years ago. In this study, 620 people aged between less than 18 years and over 45 years in the male and female groups with different levels of education and different occupation of status in the busy areas of Tehran were selected with distribution of the questionnaire, the knowledge and population intention in using these devices were investigated. Public information about use of SOLARIUM and their awareness on the risks of radiation and different effects on different skin and eyes color is not enough and it is necessary to provide appropriate and more information for community in using these devices. Also applicants shall have the opportunity to be aware of the hazards and have right information to decide appropriately.
