Title

APPLICATION OF MEG AEROSOL FIRE EXTINGUISHING TECHNOLOGY IN CONTAINERS CARRYING DANGEROUS GOODS

Pages

  18-27

Abstract

fire caused by DANGEROUS GOODS is among very serious risks possible in container ships and although the effects of such risks in commercial SHIPPING may involve disastrous human damage, economic losses, and environmental consequences, efficient preventive and reactive strategies to reduce or eliminate them are not many Problems regarding access to the container and its cargo, limitations on the possibility of utilizing safety equipment, limitations on providing and mobilizing resources required for emergency response, difficult access to support facilities during a voyage, environmental considerations, costly use of many safety devices on board, and so on cause the complexity of the firefighting issue in container ships. A possible solution for this challenging problem is to focus on the immunization of the container itself rather than installing huge firefighting equipment and facilities in the ship. The IRI has proposed, in DSC13-3-11, the use of the AEROSOL MEG TECHNOLOGY– a relatively new product in the firefighting industry used quite effectively before in such various firefighting applications as the offshore industry and engine rooms of merchant ships– inside transportation containers. Considering the merits and capabilities of this technology, it seems that its application in container transport of DANGEROUS GOODS can be quite effective. Effort has been made in this paper to study and propose the exploitation of this technology in fighting fire in containers carrying DANGEROUS GOODS besides explaining different firefighting processes existing in industry, describing the AEROSOL MEG TECHNOLOGY in particular, and presenting its conceptual design and commercialization strategy.
