Abstract

Old age is a period of life in which ELDERLY people are exposed to potential threats, such as increased chronic illness, loneliness, isolation and lack of social support, and due to physical and mental disabilities, in many cases, their independency is threatened. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment based group intervention on health and COGNITIVE FUNCTION in ELDERLY patients with age-related macular degeneration. This research was a semi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test using two experimental and control groups. The research population included ELDERLY patients with age-related macular degeneration referred to Karaj’s specialized eye clinic. The sample consisted of 28 people who were selected by convenience sampling and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. An intervention program based on acceptance and commitment was conducted in 8 sessions of 120 minutes in the form of group counseling. The results of this study were analyzed using repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and LSD tests. The results of this study shows that intervention therapy based on acceptance and commitment has a significant effect on the variable of MENTAL HEALTH in general health, and the subscales of physical symptoms, anxiety, insomnia and Depression. But results were not significant in the subscale of social function. These effects were retained in follow-up, but the intervention was unaffected by COGNITIVE FUNCTION. According to the findings of the study, acceptance and commitment based therapy could be used to promote MENTAL HEALTH in the ELDERLY with age-related macular degeneration.
