Title

FREEDOM AND SUFISM A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF FREEDOM FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF MUSLIM MYSTICS

Pages

  127-151

Abstract

Mystics, moralists, politicians and political philosophers deal with the concept of FREEDOM and its nature. In Muslim mystical works, the concept of FREEDOM is repeatedly mentioned in its moral-mystical terms; the apparent and hidden obstacles are expressed and the ways of passing them are explained. This article, firstly, deals with explanation of various kinds of FREEDOM and its different definitions by Muslim MYSTICS. Secondly, these different kinds of definitions of FREEDOM are compared with the similar concepts and categories such as SERVITUDE, SUFISM and PERMISSIBILITY (ibahah) and their relation with the concept of FREEDOM is explained. In this part, it is shown that from a mystical view, FREEDOM is not opposed to SERVITUDE and SUFISM; rather, they have the same meaning and are inseparable. In other words, it is stated that in Muslim MYSTICS' speech, true SERVITUDE and SUFISM are not obtained except by reaching FREEDOM. However, according to most MYSTICS, there is no relation between FREEDOM and PERMISSIBILITY. The few who believe FREEDOM to be released from God's orders and rules are criticized both theoretically and practically, and rejected by great MYSTICS.
