Abstract

Purpose: The aim was to identify the impact of foreign sanctions on scientific communications and research activities of Researchers at Razi Vaccine & Serum Research Institute. Methodology: The mixed-method qualitative-quantitative research was used, case study for qualitative part and questionnaire survey for quantitative section. The research population included 200 Researchers of Razi institute. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of 15 Researchers. Based on the findings of the interviews an online questionnaire was developed and sent to 200 Researchers of which 51 were completed. Findings: The findings showed that economic and scientific sanctions have had negative impacts such as scientific communication decrease, difficulty in research activities, and reduction of quality and quantity of research activities in the institute. On the other hand, sanctions have had positive impacts such as improvement of our Researchers’ viewpoint for transmitting posed limitations to opportunities for scientific growth. Conclusion: Sanctions have caused psychological impacts and selfrestrictions among Researchers. Sanctions, however, have had positive outcomes as well, including promoting self-confidence and fostering creativity. The impact of sanctions varies among different scientific fields.
