Abstract

Religion is one of the oldest and most important social institutions and all societies throughout history have had it. The present study aims to assess the relationship between MEDIA CONSUMPTION (domestic TVs and satellite channels) with the students’ religiosity. This study was conducted using a survey method. The study consisted of all new students studying in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Hormozgan University in the academic year 95-94. Questionnaires based on census have been distributed among all of them (new students). The data collected with the help of spss software were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings of the study indicated religiosity among students in Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences stands at an average and higher than average level. Analytical results show that there’s a positive relation between the rate of domestic TV consumption and the level of religiosity. The ceremonial aspect of religion had the most relation with watching domestic TVs. The use of domestic TVs also has a positive relationship with other religious aspects, but this correlation was not significant statistically. The results show a significant reverse relationship between the consumption of satellite channels and the whole of religion. It can be said that the emotional aspect of religion has the highest correlation with the use of satellite channels. This comes as the ritualistic aspect does not bear such a relation.
