Abstract

 This study has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching optimism on the basis of the Quranic verses on the self-esteem and life expectancy of socially-impaired (addicted) women. The research design is pretest-posttest with control group. The population includes all the addicted women (29) referring to the addiction treatment centers in Rudsar, Iran in 2016. From this group, 24 women who achieved the lowest scores on the Cooper Smith’s Self-Esteem Index and Miller’s Life Expectancy Questionnaire were selected and randomly put into the experimental group (12 subjects) and control group (12 subjects). Then, the experimental group received 10 90-minute sessions of optimism training whereas the control group didn’t receive any treatment. At the end, both groups were administered the questionnaires. The results of covariance analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between optimism and hopefulness (p<0.005), whereas this relationship was not significant about self-esteem. In other words, it was shown that optimism can be effective in promoting hopefulness, but promotion of self-esteem is related to other factors.
