Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual model of factors and settings that shape women's incompatibility with the families of their husbands, the circumstances and variables leading to this condition, and individuals’ strategies to manage these relationships and boost compatibility. The research is based on the qualitative approach and Grounded Theory method. The required data were collected through the theoretical sampling method and, at each stage, the analysis of the previous data collected from the 17 married women having at least one year of experience in communicating and living closely with the family of their husbands was considered. Following the analysis of the interviews, two groups of speculative factors were extracted: the first group were the factors underlying the process of incompatibility with the family of the husband (grouped under 3 main categories: “how recognition, attribution and processing of information is carried out by an individual”, “how the interpersonal relationships of the couple with the extended family are formed", and "how the interpersonal relationships of the couple with each other are formed") and the second included the strategies for having compatibility with the family of the husband (grouped under 4 main categories: “cognitive coping strategies”, “communicative coping strategies’, “structural coping strategies”, and “religious coping strategies”). The findings related to the review and evaluation of the factors underlying conflicts with the husband's family indicate that there are numerous complex factors related to personal and interpersonal relationships, which, in turn, implies that couple therapists and counselors need to consider the importance of these issues in the treatment of couples’ incompatibility with the families of their spouses.
