Abstract

Language, to Saussure, was a system, essentially developed for communication. For it to take place competence and performance play a significant role. Competence is a linguistic ability while performance, which comes into being through syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships, is a semantic and aesthetic phenomenon. For creating or studying artistic works, it is important to be aware of the distinctive elements creating form and MEANING apart. MEANING, which emerges from the links existing in the internal network, connects with the world outside, and in this process, grammatical and lexical elements play an important part. Of these elements, DETERMINERS are an important element. This article, while presenting the functions of seven DETERMINERS (i.e. demonstrative adjective, indefinite adjective, quantifier adjective, interrogative determiner, premodifying descriptive adjective, premodifying indefinite articles, and title), and explaining their relationships with their respective nucleus, examines the frequency of each in the "Story of Rostam and Sohrab" and analyzes their rhetorical motives. Furthermore, since in any communicative act, signs have one of five functions, it is argued that DETERMINERS in this story fulfill certain functions which are of greater importance.
