Abstract

Understanding epics, such as SHAHNAMEH - which is the document of the Iranian identity - without paying attention to MYTHOLOGY and using its modern theories does not seem possible.Based on Strauss' and Bakhtin's theories of DIALOGISM, the present study examines and presents the similarities in the elements of the myth of Jamhid in its various narratives. These similarities could be found between the myth of Jamhid and other myths as well.The results of the study confirm the theory of DIALOGISM and indicate that the myth of JAMSHID in SHAHNAMEH has a close relation with other Indian, Iranian and Semitic texts written before or after it. There could be two different reasons: firstly, the narratives may share the same origin and one could be adopted from the other; secondly there could be any kind of coincidence in different cultures, originating in the same cultural and geographical conditions - or as Strauss puts it in the same function of human mind.
