Abstract

 Various INTERPOLATION and estimation tools are used to spatially model a regional variable across an area or site. This paper presents a new INTERPOLATION method using the generalization of radial basis function network and taking into account the spatial coordinates of the input data. In order to perform INTERPOLATION in this method, the spatial structure and ANISOTROPY of the data are first analyzed, then the radii and angles of rotation of ANISOTROPY ellipsoid are determined based on directional variography. The ANISOTROPY ellipsoid is used to determine the neighborhood radius of each point as well as the neighboring points of each node of the hidden unit. The COVARIANCE MATRIX and a SHAPE FACTOR of the kernel functions are therefore computed according to the average half-distance of all the neighboring sample points. The generalized kernel matrix includes the corrected kernel functions and the coordinates of the nodes in the hidden units utilized to solve the weight matrix. Finally, the INTERPOLATION is performed at each point of the regular network (unsampled points). The efficiency of this INTERPOLATION algorithm was evaluated by a synthetic dataset having an irregular 3D pattern. The cross validation between actual and estimated values represents a correlation coefficient of about 0.78 with a best fit line passing through the actual and estimated values close to 45 degrees.
