Title

ON-TASK VERSUS OFF-TASK SELF-ASSESSMENTS: AN EXPERIENCE IN IRANIAN CONTEXT

Pages

Abstract

This paper was attempted to investigate the effectiveness of the use of SELF-ASSESSMENT (SA) by Iranian EFL learners at the elementary level. The subject of SELF-ASSESSMENT is a topic whose complexity has meant little conclusive knowledge and thus needs further investigation. This article first summarizes the research literature with the use of a SELF-ASSESSMENT procedure. The second phase of the study is an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of a SELF-ASSESSMENT instrument with elementary learners. In this study, two different types of self assessment are taken into account; that is, ON-TASK ASSESSMENT which involves a contextualized format- the context being involved- and OFF-TASK ASSESSMENT which comprises a decontextualized format. A single group of learners (N=25) was used to perform on on-task and off-task SELF-ASSESSMENTs. In the first session, learners were asked to perform off-task SAs and answer the attitude/personality questionnaire. In the second session, the students conducted the on-task SAs. The results of the two different types of SELF-ASSESSMENT were correlated with those of the teacher assessment. The findings indicated that learners were more successful in the evaluation and assessment of themselves in an on-task form compared with an off-task form. The analysis of the attitude/personality questionnaire signified a difference between learners’ personality factors in either forms of the assessments.
