Comparative Analysis and Prioritization of Factors affecting Honor Killings with other Homicides

Pages

  53-74

Abstract

Background and aim: honor killings are one of the types of killings that occur most often in tribal and traditional societies under the influence of tribal norms, ethnic nervousness, patriarchal structure, social pressure, and so on. The psychological impact of these killings on the community led the author to conduct a research aimed at analyzing and prioritizing the factors affecting honor killings in comparison to other killings in Khuzestan, Kermanshah and Ilam provinces from 2012 to 2016. Research methodology: The purpose of this study is practical and in terms of data collection method is scientific-comparative. The statistical population of the study included all experts and pundits in the investigation of honor killings and other murders. The sample size was calculated using Cochran formula of 200 people. Data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire and the data was analyzed using Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Findings: Based on the results of the Friedman and Wilcoxon test, all research hypotheses were confirmed except for the effect of economic factors on honor killings. Cultural issues make the highest impact with honor killings and the economic issues make the least impact. Conclusion: The results showed that the factors of Cultural Poverty, tribal Customs, tribal prejudice and honor, extreme social surveillance of women, violent structure of traditional society, patriarchal culture and forced marriage were the most effective factors in committing honor killings compared to other murders. Also modifying the cultural pattern of traditional societies with the supervision of responsible organizations and agencies may be the most effective way to counteract this phenomenon.
