Title

THE PROBLEM OF WILLING FROM THE MYSTICAL VIEWPOINT

Pages

  101-124

Abstract

The topic of WILLING is one of the important and most attractive topics discussed in some branches of human sciences. Scholars and experts of each of these sciences have expounded it from their own viewpoints. In Islamic mysticism, too, it has a high - ranking status, so that it is discussed in relation to the Divine Realm. In this paper, the writer, while explaining some of the mystics' views concerning the problem of WILLING, points out how we can reconcile these two seemingly inconsistent truths: on the one hand, the mystics and contemplatives counsel us to participate in WILLING and to be WILLING men; and, on the other hand, according to them, immortality and permanence after extinction is due to the negation of the WILLING. At the end, Imam Khomeini's theory is presented, namely the idea that, at the beginning, the creator of the whole reality has sympathetically willed the creatures, so that man appreciates the spiritual journey to perfection is both the object of God's WILL and the object of man's power. This, of course, does not contradict the overpowered man's WILLING.
