Abstract

This correlational study was conducted with the purpose of investigating the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between religious orientation and life satisfaction and with the help of a survey-descriptive method. The population consisted of all students and clergymen in the city of Qom and 674 ones were selected as the sample by the convenience sampling. They answered Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, Hill's revised religious orientation scale, and Diener's satisfaction with life scale. The results showed that life satisfaction has a significant and positive relationship with self-esteem and intrinsic, extrinsic-personal, extrinsic-social, and entire religious orientation. In addition, self-esteem has fully a mediating role in the relationship between entire religious orientation and life satisfaction. According to the results, for raising students' and clergymen's life satisfaction, it is recommended that those religious beliefs that increase people's self-esteem be reinforced.
