Title

The Ethical Issues of Choosing the Fetus Sex for Non-Medical Reasons

Pages

  43-62

Abstract

By emerging the advanced fertility and infertility technologies, many parents have become closer to reaching their long-term dream, which is the choice of their children sex before birth. There are supporters of and opponents against using these advanced technologies. Although the choice of sex for medical reasons (to prevent the transmission of disease to the next generation) has widely been accepted, this choice for non-medical reasons (parental sex preferences) has been a controversial issue in the ethical and public polices of most countries. The present study was a documentary research and applied both Latin and Persian papers and texts related to the supporters of and opponents against choosing the fetus sex (published during 1996-2017). The results demonstrated that there is a necessity for revising and formulating the laws about the issue of choosing the fetus sex before the fertility for non-medical reasons. Especially, this issue is acceptable if a family has both girls and boys and wants to make a balance; but the control of executive and demographic policy-maker organizations is necessary as well as providing medical consulting services to applicant families.
