Abstract

 The present research employed a descriptive-analytical method to investigate the jurisprudential rule of maintaining relations with relatives and its psychological functions; thus, the Quranic verses, narratives, and Shiite scholars' views, related to maintaining relations with relatives, were reviewed. To make the view of Islam on maintaining relations with relatives obvious, understanding the importance and practicality of maintaining relations with relatives and its psychological functions were explained; therefore, maintaining relations with relatives were discussed in two sections: in first section, following topics were explained: breaking relations with relatives is forbidden, the lowest level of maintaining relations with relatives, which is maintaining relations with all relatives (even non-Harbi unbelievers, debauchees, and Nasebi enemies) is obligated, and giving financial gifts to relatives and even other people is recommended. In second section, the psychological functions of maintaining relations with relatives were reviewed. According to the results, the most psychological functions of maintaining relations with relatives, as a divine duty, are as follows: mental relaxation, feeling of safety, satisfaction of emotional needs, satisfaction of the need for love, belonging to a group, self-expression and sense of being valuable, flourishing talents through simulation and modeling, education and observation of family and social norms, facilitating the process of socialization, and treatment of social anxiety.
