The effect of government size on globalization in selected countries

Abstract

 The presence of government in national markets is an important factor that undermines the facing internal environment, especially national economy, with global competition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of government size on globalization in 95 selected countries from 1985 to 2014 using dynamic panel model (GMM). In this paper, multiple indicators such as KOF globalization index, foreign direct investment and export share in gross domestic product have been studied. The results show that an increase in government size has significant negative effects on globalization index, foreign direct investment inflows and exports. It can be said that the widespread presence of government can weaken the success of a country in global interactions and international markets. the effects of other variables in the model suggest that human development, control of corruption, expenditure on research and development and domestic product have positive effects, but inflation and high rates of tariffs have negative effects on attracting international capital and promoting exports.
