Title

Misunderstanding the meaning of "Kurd" in Shahnameh

Abstract

In the Ferdowsi narrative of the myth of Zahhak, Armiyel and Garmiyel, after reaching his kitchen, save one man from the death each day, by combining his brain with a sheep's brain. The young people saved from death, go to the mountains and the desert with the goats and sheep that the chefs gave them. Ferdowsi then reminds us that the Kurd race has been made up of these young people. (Konoun Kurd az an tokhme darad nejad) Some scholars of Shahnameh, such as Akbar Nahvi, Mustafa Jeyhouni and Timur Malmir, have considered Kurd in the abovementioned phrase, not in the sense of Kurdish people and race, but in the sense of shepherd, tent dweller, simple, and illiterate. In this essay, after reviewing the texts of pre and post Islam and the internal and and extratextual contexts, the authors have found that the four errors of hasty evaluation, incomplete investigation, incorrect generalization and disregard for the semantic context of Shahnameh verses lead to incorrect analysis of the word "Kurd", Because the pre-Islamic texts and the histories of the Islamic period all indicate that the use of the word "Kurd" in the sense of Ethnicity and race was a recurring theme, and although, later, due to the Pastoral predicament of the Kurds, this word in some Texts also used in the sense of shepherd; This cannot be generalized to the Shahnameh and the above phrase.
