Abstract

From the beginning of its formation, the Safavid government was involved in maintaining the Western borders with the Ottoman government. With the death of Shah Abbas I, the Ottomans had a good opportunity to attack the common border with Iran, and in the meantime their most important goal was the conquest of Baghdad. In the early years of Shah Safi's reign, the Safavid government was able to repel Ottoman attacks to some extent due to the preservation of the Shah Abbas's corps, but following the emergence of court rivalries that resulted in the removal of Shah Abbas's officials, the IRGC was weakened and its ability to defend Baghdad weakened and lost. This study aims to investigate the border confrontations between Iran and the Ottomans during the reign of Shah Safi with emphasis on the fall of Baghdad. Research Method in this study is historicalanalytical and data collection has been done by library method. The main research tool is citing the sources of that period, which is finally based on the findings of the sources of inference, explanation and analysis. The findings show that a number of factors have led to the loss of part of the Western borders, especially Baghdad and the Shah's failure to maintain the borders of the time of Shah Abbas I, the most important of which are: dominance of personal interests over national interests among officials, as some courtiers were even content to lose to the enemy in order to eliminate their internal rivals and opponents; intense court rivalries during the reign of Shah Safi, which led to the formation of a coalition of Turks and Tajiks against the Georgian elements, and to some extent the Shah himself was the cause of these rivalries and disputes; the recklessness of the king and commanders in making the right decisions on the battlefields; the prolongation of military conflicts with the Ottoman government has made the military forces and the Safavid Shah tired, which was not ineffective in not making a serious effort to protect Baghdad.
