Title

Analysis of Migration Flows from the Border Provinces of Iran

Pages

  165-199

Abstract

About half of the country's displaced migrants live in Border provinces. Therefore, the population living in these provinces can play an important role in maintaining sustainable security and demographic balance of the region and the country. The purpose of this study is to study the migration flows from the Border provinces of the country during the last three decades. The research method is secondary analysis of Immigration data for 16 Border provinces of the country during 1985-2015. The results show that the number of emigrants in the Border provinces in 1985-1995 was about 150, 901 people annually, which increased to about 241, 996 in 1995-2005, decreased to 174, 042 in 2005-2010, and increased again in 2010-2015 and reached to 186, 643 people. The ratio of emigrants to population shows that the provinces of Ardabil, Ilam, Kurdistan and Kermanshah have always been among the provinces that have had the highest flow of emigrants in the last three decades. The highest number of emigrants during the last three decades was related to the provinces of Khuzestan, Khorasan Razavi, Kermanshah and East Azerbaijan, respectively and the lowest for Ilam, Bushehr, South Khorasan and North Khorasan. Analysis of migration flows from Border provinces showed that men migrated more than women and young people aged 15-29 more than other age groups. The main destination of immigrants leaving the Border provinces of the country has always been Tehran province and their neighboring provinces. In the last decade, Alborz province, after Tehran province, has been one of the main destinations for immigrants leaving the western and northern Border provinces of the country; among the provinces of the southern and eastern border strip, immigrants have entered Alborz province only from Khuzestan province. Employment, education, and the completion or termination of military service for young people aged 15 to 29 have been the most important grounds for migration from Border provinces, and employment for middle-aged people.
