Abstract

This article presents the results of a study on the SPEECH ACT of DEFINITION in chemistry texts within two GENREs investigating whether or not it can serve as a criterion to differentiate the two GENREs. A random sample of60 texts written by 60 different writers was taken to serve as the corpus of the study. Of this cluster, 60 conceptual paragraphs- 30 from textbooks and 30 from research articles- as units of text were randomly selected and analyzed. Application of the Chi-Square goodness-of-fit test revealed that DEFINITIONs often cluster together in textbooks, whereas there was no evidence of them being frequent in research articles. It is, therefore, suggested here that this distinctiveness is sufficient to justify the SPEECH ACT of DEFINITION as one yardstick out of several possibles to distinguish textbooks from research articles in English language.
